Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has carried out a significant reshuffle in the Police Department, bringing fresh changes to the leadership of key police formations across the Union Territory. As many as 14 senior IPS and JKPS officers have been transferred or assigned new responsibilities.
Among the major appointments, Sujit Kumar, IPS , has been named the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir Zone . The move comes as part of a broader administrative exercise aimed at strengthening policing and improving operational coordination across Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Government Order No. 438-Home of 2026 , issued by the Home Department on August 27, Sujit Kumar, who was serving as IGP Security, J&K , has been transferred and posted as IGP Kashmir Zone against an available vacancy.
His appointment assumes significance as the Kashmir Valley continues to remain a key focus area for security, law and order and counter-insurgency operations.
In another important change, Tejinder Singh, IPS , has been posted as the new IGP Jammu Zone . He replaces Bhim Sen Tuti , who has been transferred and appointed IGP Headquarters, J&K .
The latest reshuffle also brings substantial changes at the senior police leadership level, covering important wings including CID, Security, Armed Police, Railways and the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
- Major Senior-Level Police Changes:
M.K. Sinha, IPS (1996) , who was serving as ADG Headquarters , has been transferred and appointed ADG CID, J&K . He replaces Nitish Kumar, IPS (1999) , who has been posted as ADG Armed Police, J&K , against an available vacancy.
Vivek Gupta, IPS (2007) , has been moved from his post as IGP Railways and appointed IGP Security, J&K , succeeding Sujit Kumar.
Meanwhile, Shakti Kumar Pathak, IPS (2009) , has been designated as Director, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) .
Uttam Chand, IPS (2002) , who was holding the charge of IGP Police Operations & Services at Police Headquarters , has been posted as IGP Railways, J&K . He will continue to hold the additional charge of IGP Police Operations & Services until further orders.
- District-Level Changes in J&K Police
The government order also includes a series of important district-level postings.
Sahil Sarangal, IPS (2017) , who was serving as SSP Handwara , has been transferred and posted as SSP Pulwama . He will be succeeded at Handwara by Tahir Saleem Khan, JKPS (2001) , who was serving as Staff Officer to IGP Kashmir Zone.
Sunny Gupta, IPS (2020) , has been promoted from his position as Additional SP Anantnag and posted as SSP Kishtwar . He replaces Naresh Singh , who has been transferred and appointed SSP Rajouri .
In another change, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah, JKPS (2004) , who was serving as SSP SCW Kashmir , has been posted as Staff Officer to IGP Kashmir Zone , replacing Tahir Saleem Khan.
Mubassir Latifi Ameer, IPS (2011) , presently serving as DIG Personnel, PHQ , has been transferred and posted as DIG IR Kashmir . He will also relinquish his additional charge as DIG Training, PHQ .
Wide-Ranging Administrative Overhaul:
The latest J&K Police reshuffle has touched several critical positions, including the leadership of the Kashmir and Jammu Zones, CID, Security, Armed Police, Railways, Anti-Corruption Bureau and various district police formations.
The extensive J&K Police reshuffle marks a significant leadership overhaul across the Union Territory, with important changes in the Kashmir and Jammu Zones as well as the CID, Security, Armed Police, Railways and Anti-Corruption Bureau. Several district-level police formations have also received new leadership as part of the administrative exercise.
The order was issued by the Home Department, Government of Jammu and Kashmir , by order of the Lieutenant Governor. It was signed by Chandraker Bharti, IAS, Principal Secretary to the Government, Home Department.
