Supreme Court Collegium recommends 11 Judges for Five High Courts; Six additional Judges get extension

The Supreme Court Collegium has approved a significant round of judicial appointments and extensions, recommending 11 judges for appointment across five High Courts and extending the tenure of six Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court.

The decisions were taken by the Collegium on August 18, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen the judicial strength of various High Courts across the country.

Orissa High Court:

The Collegium has recommended the appointment of the following judges to the Orissa High Court:

  • Sasmita Tripathy
  • Aditya Narayan Das
  • Rajjeet Roy
  • Gautam Misra

Gauhati High Court:

Two judges have been recommended for appointment to the Gauhati High Court:

  • Nchumbemo Mozhui
  • Helen Dawngliani

Chhattisgarh High Court:

The following three judges have been recommended for appointment to the Chhattisgarh High Court:

  • Santosh Sharma
  • Sushma Sawant
  • Sudhir Kumar

Punjab and Haryana High Court:

Justice Rohit Kapoor, presently serving as an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, has been recommended for appointment as a permanent judge.

Calcutta High Court:

Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury, currently an Additional Judge of the Calcutta High Court, has also been recommended for confirmation as a permanent judge.

Six Calcutta High Court Judges Get Tenure Extension

The Supreme Court Collegium has also approved an extension of the tenure of six Additional Judges of the Calcutta High Court. The judges are:

  • Justice Prasenjit Biswas
  • Justice Uday Kumar
  • Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta
  • Justice Supratim Bhattacharya
  • Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee
  • Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi

The latest recommendations and tenure extensions are expected to contribute to strengthening judicial capacity and ensuring continuity in the functioning of the concerned High Courts.
