West Bengal transfers several IPS and WBPS officers in major Police reshuffle

The West Bengal government has undertaken a comprehensive restructuring of its police administration, issuing transfer and posting orders for 33 senior officers, including 28 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and five West Bengal Police Service (WBPS) officers. The large-scale administrative exercise is intended to reinforce leadership across key policing, investigation, and operational units.

According to an official notification released on Tuesday, the reshuffle impacts several senior officers occupying crucial positions in the state’s police hierarchy. The fresh appointments are expected to enhance coordination, improve administrative efficiency, and strengthen law enforcement across West Bengal.

Among the notable changes, Supratim Sarkar, who was serving as Additional Director General (ADG), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been reassigned as ADG, Telecommunications. Sarkar previously held the post of Kolkata Police Commissioner before his transfer ahead of the state Assembly elections earlier this year.

In another significant appointment, senior IPS officer N R Babu has been elevated to the position of Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP), CID after serving as the Director General of Correctional Services. He will now lead the state’s premier criminal investigation agency.

The reshuffle has also brought a leadership change at the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. Amit Kumar Rathod has been appointed as the new Police Commissioner, succeeding Tripurari Atharv. The commissionerate is responsible for maintaining law and order in several key urban centres adjoining Kolkata.

Another important posting involves K Jayraman, who has been shifted from his role as ADG, North Bengal, to take charge as Director, Directorate of Economic Offences. The specialised wing investigates cases involving financial fraud, economic offences, and other white-collar crimes across the state.

The latest transfers represent one of the most extensive reorganisations of West Bengal’s police leadership in recent times. Such administrative realignments are periodically undertaken to optimise governance, improve operational effectiveness, and deploy experienced officers to strategically important assignments.

The state government’s notification does not cite specific reasons for the reshuffle. However, the newly posted officers are expected to assume charge immediately, marking a fresh phase in the administration of West Bengal’s police force.
