Tehri PSP enters a new era as THDCIL begins COD of first unit

THDC India Limited has achieved a historic first by initiating the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) process for the inaugural 250 MW unit of the 1000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand. Virtually inaugurated by Union Minister Manohar Lal, the project stands as India’s first Variable Speed PSP and the largest of its kind by any CPSE.

Lauded by dignitaries including Pankaj Agarwal (Secretary, Ministry of Power), Gurdeep Singh (CMD, NTPC), and RK Vishnoi (CMD, THDCIL), the project is seen as a game-changer for grid flexibility and renewable integration. Designed to convert off-peak surplus into peaking power, the facility will elevate the Tehri complex’s capacity to 2,400 MW, bolstering energy security and grid resilience.

The high-end turbine and control technologies are being provided by GE Vernova, reaffirming the potential of public-private collaborations in powering India’s clean energy future.
