Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), visited the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), India’s Best Performing Port, on February 19, 2025. His visit was part of a broader tour focused on promoting sustainability in the global maritime sector. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairperson of JNPA and CMD of Vadhvan Port Project Ltd. (VPPL). He was presented with an overview of JNPA’s advancements in maritime operations and sustainability initiatives, including insights into the upcoming Vadhvan Port Project, India’s 13th major port.
The discussions emphasized JNPA’s commitment to green and efficient port operations, with a focus on environmental conservation, technological innovation, and decarbonization efforts aligned with IMO’s global goals. Mr. Dominguez also toured key infrastructure developments, such as the JNPA Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and the Centralized Parking Plaza (CPP), gaining firsthand knowledge of the port’s integrated approach to economic growth and environmental responsibility.
Sharing his thoughts, Mr. Dominguez remarked, “It’s my first visit to Jawaharlal Nehru Port, and hopefully, it won’t be the last. I have witnessed the efficiency and quality of service this port provides—not just for India, but for the world. From expanding operational capacity to environmental conservation and investing in innovation, JNPA is making remarkable strides.” Unmesh Sharad Wagh echoed these sentiments, stating, “Sustainability is at the core of our growth strategy. Our upcoming Vadhvan Port will be a 100% green port, reinforcing our commitment to environmentally sustainable infrastructure.” This visit marks a significant step in strengthening international cooperation toward sustainable maritime development.
