South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, is intensifying efforts to implement environmentally sustainable coal evacuation under the First Mile Connectivity (FMC) initiative, guided by the Ministry of Coal.
In a significant development, SECL’s Dipka Megaproject launched coal loading operations through its newly constructed Rapid Loading System and Silos 3 & 4 on February 21, 2025. This marks a major step in enhancing efficient and eco-friendly coal transportation. The newly commissioned Dipka CHP-Silo FMC project boasts an annual coal evacuation capacity of 25 million tons, significantly increasing the dispatch efficiency of the megaproject.
Previously, coal dispatch at Dipka was managed through a Merry-Go-Round (MGR) system with a 15 MTPA capacity. With the commissioning of Silos 3 & 4, Dipka’s total dispatch capacity has now surged to 40 million tons per annum, aligning transportation infrastructure with production levels.
Under the PM Gatishakti Plan, SECL has undertaken 17 FMC projects with a combined capacity of 233 MTPA. Of these, 9 projects totaling 151 MTPA have already been commissioned, showcasing the company’s commitment to modernizing coal logistics. The remaining 8 projects, with a cumulative capacity of 82 MTPA, are in various stages of development and are expected to be operational within the next 2-3 years.
Benefits of First Mile Connectivity (FMC) at Dipka
- Improved efficiency with accurate coal loading, minimizing underloading and overloading.
- Faster operations reducing turnaround time and increasing rake availability.
- Enhanced coal quality by minimizing contamination and losses.
- Reduced reliance on road transport, leading to diesel cost savings and lower environmental impact.
The commissioning of these new silos represents a significant achievement for SECL, Indian Railways, and coal consumers, streamlining logistics while reducing environmental footprints.
