POWERGRID signs joint venture agreement with Nepal Electricity Authority

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has entered into a Joint Venture and Shareholders’ Agreement with the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the development of a high-capacity cross-border power transmission system.

The agreement was signed in the presence of His Excellency Kulman Ghising, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation of Nepal, and Manohar Lal, Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of India. Senior officials including Shri Pankaj Agarwal (Secretary, Power), Dr. R. K. Tyagi (CMD, POWERGRID), and Dr. Yatindra Dwivedi (Director, Personnel, POWERGRID) were also present during the occasion.

The planned Cross-Border Transmission System Projects include the Inaruwa (Nepal) – New Purnea (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link and the Lamki (Dododhara, Nepal) – Bareilly (India) 400 kV Double Circuit (Quad Moose) Transmission Link. Once operational, these corridors will significantly enhance power exchange between India and Nepal, strengthen regional energy security, and contribute to sustained economic growth in both nations.

As of October 15, 2025, POWERGRID operates 287 substations, over 1,80,864 circuit kilometres of transmission lines, and 5,81,831 MVA of transformation capacity, maintaining an impressive 99.83% transmission system availability through the use of advanced digital tools and automation technologies.
