Power Minister inaugurates COD of second unit at Khurja Super Thermal Power Project

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has successfully achieved the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the second 660 MW unit of its 2×660 MW Khurja Super Thermal Power Project (KSTPP) in Khurja, Uttar Pradesh.

The landmark occasion was virtually inaugurated by Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power, Housing & Urban Affairs, in the presence of key dignitaries including A K Sharma, Minister of Energy & Urban Development, Government of Uttar Pradesh, and Narendra Bhooshan (IAS), Additional Chief Secretary, Energy & Alternate Sources of Energy, Govt. of UP. Senior officials from the Ministry of Power, CEA, NTPC, and representatives from major consortium partners such as BHEL, L\&T, GE Vernova, RITES, Steag, and Emerson also joined the event.

Union Minister Manohar Lal applauded THDCIL for achieving this milestone, highlighting the strategic importance of KSTPP in strengthening grid stability, meeting Uttar Pradesh’s energy demand, and boosting national power capacity. He commended THDCIL for setting a new benchmark by completing the project within record time, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A K Sharma, Energy Minister of Uttar Pradesh, stated that the second unit of KSTPP will significantly enhance the state’s energy security, with 64.7% of generated power dedicated to UP, making the state more self-reliant in electricity supply.

The 1320 MW Khurja STPP, equipped with ultra-supercritical technology, advanced environmental safeguards, and captive coal linkage from Amelia Mine, is expected to generate 9,264 million units annually. With the first unit operational since January 26, 2025, and the second unit commencing commercial operations on September 22, 2025, the project represents a major leap in India’s pursuit of sustainable and reliable power infrastructure.
