NMDC steel achieves major production milestones in FY 2024-25

NMDC Steel Limited (NSL) has reached a significant milestone in its journey towards stabilization and growth, producing over two million tonnes of hot metal in the financial year 2024-25, ending March 31, 2025. This marks a 100% increase compared to the previous fiscal, when the newly operational plant produced 966,468 tonnes in its initial seven and a half months.

In just its second year, the plant has reached 60% of its rated capacity and is now on track to achieve its full production capacity of 3.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Commissioned on August 15, 2023, the integrated steel plant at Nagarnar has demonstrated consistent progress and a robust growth trajectory, highlighting NSL’s commitment to operational excellence.

NSL also made impressive strides in the market despite operating in a challenging environment. The company managed to sell over 1.45 million tonnes of Hot Rolled (HR) Coils and Sheets during FY 2024-25, a more than 300% increase in sales volume compared to the previous year. This achievement is especially noteworthy considering a two-week disruption in production and dispatch caused by transporters’ protests at the plant gates.

In March 2025, NSL set a new monthly dispatch record of 229,874 tonnes of HR Coils—the highest since production began. The surge was supported by the strategic deployment of four Liberalized Special Freight Train Operator (LSFTO) Rakes, which alone accounted for around 40,000 tonnes. This represented a 63% increase from the previous monthly best of 141,207 tonnes in February 2025. With plans to expand its LSFTO fleet, NSL is poised to further improve its logistics and customer service.

Encouraged by the team’s performance, CMD of NMDC & NSL, Amitava Mukherjee, expressed his confidence in the steel division, stating, “Our steel team is gaining in strength and crossing milestones with each passing day. I am confident that with their dedicated effort and enthusiasm, we will soon reach rated capacity, even as we are inching towards becoming EBITDA positive.”

FY 2024-25 was also a year of accreditations and certifications for NSL. The company secured four ISO Licenses and seven BIS Certifications, reinforcing its position in the domestic market. Furthermore, it earned the prestigious “Conformité Européenne” (CE) Certificate, opening up access to European markets. Joydeep Dasgupta, Director (Production), NMDC & NSL, praised the team for overcoming several operational challenges and maintaining momentum. “Strategic moves meant to improve systems and sustain progress have yielded results. This augurs well for NSL and signals many more achievements to come,” he said.

MNVS Prabhakar, Executive Director and Head of the NSL Steel Plant, Nagarnar, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the team’s commitment to delivering high-quality hot rolled steel. He added, “We are also firm in our resolve to further consolidate our position and contribute to the national goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat.”
