Justice P B Varale appointed Judge of Supreme Court

Justice Prasanna Bhalachandra Varale was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on January 24, 2024. He is the first Chief Justice of a High Court belonging to a Scheduled Caste to be directly elevated to the Supreme Court.

Prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court, Justice Varale was the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. He was appointed to that position in October 2022.

Justice Varale is the senior-most High Court Judge belonging to a Scheduled Caste. He is also the only Chief Justice belonging to a Scheduled Caste among the Chief Justices of High Courts across the country.
His appointment to the Supreme Court was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on January 19, 2024. The Collegium is a body of senior judges that is responsible for recommending appointments to the Supreme Court and High Courts.

The Government of India approved Justice Varale’s appointment on January 24, 2024. He is expected to take oath as a Supreme Court Judge on January 25, 2024.
