Justice B.R. Gavai takes oath as Chief Justice of India

In a significant moment for the Indian judiciary, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai has officially been sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. The oath of office was administered by the President of India at a solemn ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s highest judicial institution.

Justice Gavai’s elevation is not only a matter of legal significance but also of historical importance. He becomes the 52nd Chief Justice of India and notably, the first Dalit Chief Justice in over a decade—only the second in the history of the Supreme Court after Justice K.G. Balakrishnan. His appointment is seen as a milestone in promoting inclusivity and diversity in the higher judiciary.

Born on November 24, 1960, in Maharashtra, Justice Gavai pursued law from the Government Law College, Mumbai. He began his legal career in 1985 and practiced extensively in the Bombay High Court. Known for his legal acumen and integrity, he was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003, where he served with distinction for over 15 years. In May 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India.

Throughout his judicial career, Justice Gavai has been known for his balanced approach to law, his strong commitment to constitutional values, and his efforts to uphold the rights of the marginalized. His judgments have often reflected a deep concern for social justice, human rights, and administrative fairness.

As he assumes the highest judicial office in the country, Justice Gavai is expected to steer the Supreme Court through a range of complex legal and constitutional challenges. His tenure is also anticipated to contribute to greater transparency, timely justice, and strengthened trust in the judiciary.

His swearing-in marks not just a personal milestone but a moment of pride for the nation, celebrating merit, representation, and the strength of India’s democratic institutions.
