JNPA’s GTI hosts naming ceremony for Maersk’s Dual-Fuel Methanol Vessel

AP Moller-Maersk (Maersk) held the naming ceremony of its latest dual-fuel methanol-powered vessel at Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTI), a major container terminal at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), on February 28, 2025. This marks the first time a global shipping line has conducted such an event in India, reinforcing the country’s importance in Maersk’s strategy for sourcing alternative fuels.

The ceremony was attended by Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, and Smt. Raksha Khadse, Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, alongside Unmesh Sharad Wagh, IRS, Chairperson, JNPA, and Maersk’s top leadership, including CEO Vincent Clerc and APM Terminals CEO Keith Svendsen.

The newly named vessel, Albert Maersk, is one of 18 large dual-fuel methanol vessels being delivered in 2024 and 2025. Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, South Korea, it has a capacity of 16,592 TEU and is part of Maersk’s strategy to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040. The use of bio and e-methanol in its operations can reduce GHG emissions by at least 65%, depending on the production method.

India’s role in sustainable maritime trade continues to expand, and hosting this event at JNPA’s Gateway Terminals India highlights the country’s growing contribution to green shipping solutions and global decarbonization efforts.
