Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has officially rebranded its advanced Hindustan Jet Trainer (HJT-36) as ‘Yashas’, following extensive modifications to improve spin resistance and flight characteristics. The aircraft’s new identity was unveiled by Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary (Defence Production), in the presence of Dr. D K Sunil, CMD, HAL, and senior officials, during Aero India 2025.
The Yashas has been upgraded with state-of-the-art avionics, an ultra-modern cockpit, and advanced training capabilities, ensuring optimal pilot training for modern military aviation. Powered by a FADEC-controlled AL55I jet engine, it boasts a superior thrust-to-weight ratio, optimized fuel efficiency, and increased reliability. The aircraft’s stepped-up rear cockpit, drooped nose, and glass cockpit with Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) and a Head-Up Display (HUD) enhance visibility and situational awareness.
Designed for Stage II pilot training, counter-insurgency operations, aerobatics, and armament training, the Yashas can carry up to 1000 kg of armaments. With its stall and spin resistance, single-point ground refueling, and defueling capabilities, the aircraft is set to play a vital role in India’s defense training ecosystem.
