EIL achieves India’s first Bamboo-based biorefinery milestone

Engineers India Limited (EIL) has successfully completed the Mechanical Completion of India’s first bamboo-based biorefinery project at Numaligarh, Assam. The project, executed for Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) in EPCM mode, aims to produce 49,000 TPA of Bio Ethanol, 11,000 TPA of Acetic Acid, and 19,000 TPA of Furfural using bamboo as the primary feedstock. The technology for this pioneering initiative has been supplied by Chempolis OY.

This project marks a historic milestone in India’s bio-refinery programs, positioning the country at the forefront of sustainable energy solutions. Beyond boosting ethanol supply for the transportation sector, it will also enable the production of value-added chemicals from biorefinery by-products.

Aligned with the Government of India’s Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) and the Prime Minister’s vision for Net Zero by 2070, this achievement by EIL reflects its six-decade legacy of building innovative energy infrastructure and contributing to the nation’s energy security.
