Dr. Ankur Awadhiya, IFS(MP:2014) was appointed as Deputy Director, Forest Survey of India, Dehradun (AIGF level) on tenure deputation basis under the Central Staffing Scheme of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (CSS-MoEF & CC) in June 2023. He is a 2014 batch Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre.
Dr. Awadhiya is an engineer by training, with a B. Tech in Biological Sciences and Bio-engineering from IIT Kanpur in 2009 and a Ph.D in Biodegradable Plastics and Drug-Delivery Vehicles from IIT Kanpur in 2015. He is also an Associate (Honours Diploma) of the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Dehradun, and holds a Post-graduate diploma in Advanced Wildlife Management from the Wildlife institute of India, Dehradun.
Dr. Awadhiya has a keen interest in academics and research, and is an author of three books dealing with distance sampling and the use of geographical information systems (GIS) in forest and wildlife conservation. He has also been a recipient of several honors including the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) scholarship.
In his previous role as Deputy Conservator of Forests under the Green India Mission in Madhya Pradesh, Dr. Awadhiya developed and deployed several devices and applications for the rapid detection of forest fires, intrusions, electrocutions and also for administrative decision-making. The techniques involved real-time processing of satellite data, data-driven geographical visualisations, novel electronic and imaging instrumentation, and image processing, among others.
Dr. Awadhiya’s appointment as Deputy Director, Forest Survey of India is a recognition of his expertise in forest and wildlife conservation, as well as his technological skills. He is expected to play a key role in FSI’s efforts to assess and monitor the country’s forest resources.
