Mumbai, 19 May 2025: In a rare gesture of accountability, the Maharashtra Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP), and the Mumbai Police Commissioner extended a formal apology to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice B. R. Gavai for a protocol lapse and undue delay upon his arrival at Mumbai International Airport.
This marked the CJI’s first visit to his home state since assuming office. Reflecting on the incident, Justice Gavai stated, “When the head of a constitutional organ visits his home state for the first time after entering office — and especially when he is from the same state — those responsible must consider if the treatment was suitable. I don’t wish to dwell on minor matters, but it’s important that the public is aware.”
