Prashant Kumar appointed Chairman of UP Education Service Selection Commission

Lucknow: In a move aimed at strengthening employment generation and streamlining teacher recruitment ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has appointed former Director General of Police Prashant Kumar as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC).

Prashant Kumar, a retired IPS officer of the 1990 Uttar Pradesh cadre, assumes the role nearly six months after superannuation as the state’s DGP. His appointment has been made for a tenure of three years. As Chairman, he will oversee recruitment processes for teachers in secondary and higher education institutions across Uttar Pradesh.

The position was previously held by Professor Kirti Pandey, who recently stepped down from the post. The UPESSC was constituted in 2024 following the merger of the Higher Education Service Selection Commission and the Secondary Education Service Selection Commission, a reform aimed at creating a unified and transparent teacher recruitment mechanism in the state.

The appointment is expected to enhance administrative efficiency, accelerate recruitment timelines and support the government’s broader agenda of education reform and job creation in Uttar Pradesh.
