Twelve years after its launch, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has emerged as a major pillar of India’s financial inclusion journey, connecting millions of citizens with formal banking and social security services.
According to the latest figures, PMJDY accounts have increased nearly four-fold , rising from 14.72 crore in 2015 to 59.09 crore as of August 19, 2026 . Of these, 32.92 crore accounts belong to women , while 45.95 crore accounts are held in rural and semi-urban areas .
The scheme has also witnessed a sharp rise in deposits. PMJDY deposits have grown from ₹15,670 crore in March 2015 to ₹3.16 lakh crore in August 2026 , reflecting greater participation in the formal financial system.

PMJDY has evolved beyond simply providing bank accounts. It has helped bring underserved communities into the formal financial ecosystem while expanding access to savings, digital payments, insurance, pensions and credit .
The rise in India’s Financial Inclusion Index from 53.9 in 2018 to 67 in 2026 further reflects the country’s expanding financial access.
