The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has approved the promotion of seven IPS officers of the 1984 batch to the rank of special director or special director general in central agencies and central paramilitary forces.Senior IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre Rakesh Asthana promoted as special director in the CBI.Asthana is currently an additional director in the CBI and is handling several important probes including the AgustaWestland scam and cases related to allegations of corruption in Delhi government among others.

Among those promoted include Deepak Kumar Mishra, who has been posted as special DG in CRPF. He is presently holding charge of additional DG in the force.A P Maheshwari, presently ADG BSF, has been been promoted to special DG in the border guarding force, Rajesh Ranjan, ADG in BSF has also been made special DG.Gurbachan Singh, Additional Director in IB, has been promoted as Special Director in Intelligence Bureau (IB). He is a 1984 batch IPS officer of Orissa cadre.
Sudeep Lakhatakia, Additional DG in CRPF, has been promoted as Special DG in Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). He is a 1984 batch IPS officer of Telangana cadre.S Javeed Ahmed, Director NICFS, has been promoted as Special DG in Government of India. He is a 1984 batch IPS officer of UP cadre.
